KANK: Tale of marital infidelity

KANK - Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is lastest movie of Karan Johar(KJ). The hype had build up for this movie over a month. Expectations were high due to many reasons such as star cast, music etc.

Boy 1 loves Girl 1, Boy 2 loves Girl 2. Parents make the decision. Boy 1 marries Girl 2, Boy 2 marries Girl 1. Both couples unhappy. Parents come to know, decision revised, Boy 1 marries Girl 1, Boy 2 marries Girl 2. Happy ending!!! Pass it on, let everyone know the plot of this forthcoming hit movie!

This was the forward which everyone received few weeks back revealing plot of movie. From where this e-mail orginated? whether it was publicity stunt created by producer himself ? Anyway this e-mail had created curiosity among movie buffs.

Now lets talk about the movie.

The plot of KANK is based on infidelity(the quality of being unfaithful). It raises a question "What do you do if you find your soulmate after marriage? ". In a recent interview Karan Johar said that he had overheard a couple's breakup conversation at London which was happening with dignity. They were mentioned was pinpointing each other's positives are negatives. This incidence motivated him to make a movie about marriages which are falling apart.

So how is KANK overall?
KANK is a average movie but the plot very different from previous KJ ventures, with good combination of style and substance. It has a stamp of usual bollywood masala movie such good songs, exotic locations. The length of movie(22 reels) is too much. Screenplay is engaging (better than Krrish, Fanaa) doesn't make viewers to run out of hall except for last 20 minutes where it is dragged on an on. Some people may find it boring so be mentally prepared in case you are planning to see movie.

The story of movie revolves around 2 marriages
- In one emotionally impulsive, outgoing Rishi(Abhishek) is tied up with no so outgoing Maya(Rani). Their marriage is mainly a compromise. Also Maya doesn't have any passion towards Rishi.
- In other case Rhea(Preity) and Dev(SRK) marriage is also falling apart. Dev a soccer player has suffered a career ending injury. So Rhea is bread earner for the family and also claims 'Is ghar me mard mai hoon'

Performances of actors are good, all of them have done justice to their character. It would be unfair to compare their performances. To say atleast I liked Preity's role. Eventhough her role is not so much but her character is powerful.

Songs composed by Shankar & Co are good and are picturised in a nice way. Some of them are situational and others are meant for relief. 'Wheres the party tonight' really brings relief in second half.

Some of the scenes, sequences are amazing and skillfully executed.
- Rani and Preity approaching SRK from across the road, both unaware of the other's presence. 10 out 10 to director for this sequence.
- Shah Rukh in Kiron Kher's birthday party expressing his feeling about Rani, finally saying it as humour and subsequent facial reaction of Amitabh is too good.

Cinematography is good but not awesome, the reason may be that location is not fresh. I am bored of seeing Mahattan skyline again and again after 9/11 incident. Karan wasn't there any another location where you could have shot this movie ? Hope you find different and fresh location for your next movie.

Now its time review the reviews of bollywood critics.

Taran Adarsh(indiafm): 4 and 1/2 star : As usual Taran has given biased review. His rating mainly indicates possible commercial sucess of movie. Anyway the rating too much for a average movie.
Excerpts
- the spat between SRK and Preity on one hand [Preity: “I wear the pants in this house”], followed by the heated argument between Abhishek and Rani [Abhishek: “You can't even bear a child”] is amongst the most remarkable portions in the film.

Rajeev Masand (cnn-ibn): 4 star: This review aired on friday 10.30 pm on cnn-ibn had raised my expectations about the movie. Masand rarely gives 4 star for a bollywood movie. His ratings for recent blockbusters Krrish (2 star) , Fanaa (1 star) were very less relative to KANK. I am suprised that a critic like him was not able find any flaw in the movie. In comments to his review in ibnlive.com someone has said "I am not disappointed with the movie because Karan Johar never makes a movie in classic sense of a word, he makes a product that should sell well. I have more problems with Masand's review that got me into watching this."

Excerpts of review

- KANK unabashedly holds a mirror to everything that's wrong in modern marriages.
- Unlike the protagonists of his last film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham who were all good-as-gold and pristine clean and merely conflicted over a misunderstanding, the characters in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna are damaged goods. They're confused, they're complexed, and they're hurting as hell. As a result they do all the wrong things and they say all the wrong things. And really, that's what makes them both relatable and endearing on screen.
- Unarguably the film's central source of comedy is Amitabh Bachchan playing Abhishek's randy father with a voracious sexual appetite.
- Few writers have such solid control over their screenplay as Karan Johar does. Few understand the intricacies of narrative as well as he does.
- Johar goes from highs to lows, from plateaus to peaks with the ease of a pro. He knows exactly how to turn a seemingly ordinary scene into something special with just that one line of dialogue, or that hint of background music.
- While it's bold and treads new ground as far as Karan Johar's themes are concerned, the film also relies heavily on trademark Johar dependables like eye-watering cinematography, impeccable production design and extravagantly filmed songs.
- And therein lies the real risk and ultimately the real success of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna - Johar tackles an uncomfortable premise but very much within the parameters of your masala Bollywood potboiler and with all the trappings in place.
- The film's ensemble cast plays off each other comfortably, and never once slips out of character in a bid to outdo the other.
- Distancing himself from the kind of melodrama he's subjected us to in the past, Johar goes for more subtle emotions this time. His characters may still wear designer tags but they're all grey and they've messed up their lives.

Raja Sen (rediff): 2 star: This review is too harsh.
Excerpts
- Couples on the verge of marriage would do well not to head into the theatre. You may be dumped for the choice of flick.

Sarita Tanwar (Mid-day) : 3 and 1/2star: I feel Sarita is die hard SRK fan.
Excerpts
- Beg, borrow or steal — but this movie experience is a must. Watch it for its bold and beautiful content; watch it for the maturity of Karan Johar; and watch it for Shah Rukh Khan’s ever-lasting performance. KANK is the biggest celebration of this season. ( this indicates that KJ might have paid Sarita for writing review )

N. K. Deoshi (apunkachoice.com): No rating: This is closer to my view about movie. Author has found out areas in which the movie lacking.
Excerpts
- the movie oscillates between two extremes – fun and melodrama. Perhaps that is Johar’s idea of a well-balanced film.
- The fun part is entertaining, no doubt, particularly when it comes from the two Bachchans.
- It is the melodrama, the rift in marriages, the tiffs between spouses, the repeated talks of rishte, jazbaat, love and pain that becomes superficial after a while.
- Amitabh Bachchan, whose performance is the most appreciable in the film, is ironically the most overdressed, except when he is in bed with some firang babe.
- Frankly, KANK makes you no wiser about marriages or relationships.

To conclude KANK is not a memorable movie overall. It can be remembered for breaking new grounds, drifting away from traditions saying 'If the marriage isn’t working, divorce is the answer.'

If you have managed to read this post till here, I am sure you would be able sit in theatre for 3 hrs 10 minutes.

So whats your opinion about KANK ? Post it as comments....

Lakshmi vs Saraswathi

Looking at title one would feel that this post about rivalry between two goddess ??. Actually its about tradeoff between Lakshmi and Sarawathi in different context. I never intended to write a post about this topic. But discussions in my previous post(corporate) made me to write one about this.

3-4 years back Sharukh Khan(SRK) in an interview was asked about his expectation of his home production. He replied "As a filmmaker I expect both Lakshmi and Saraswathi for my movie i.e. both Box Office Success and Critical Acclaim :)".

So in context of movies

  • Lakshmi = Box Office Success: Movie recovering its production cost.
  • Saraswathi = Critical Acclaim: Movie obtaining appreciation from critics about its content, screenplay etc.

Lets discuss about this in detail.

Lakshmi

So what factors make movie a commercial success

  • Starcast: Presence of superstar make a lot of difference. Audiences will be waiting for movie of a superstar movies for months, which ensures good opening for movie. Many people are waiting for KANK which is to be released on August 11.
  • Good Songs: Songs are responsible for creating audience interest about movie before release. KANK songs are good example for this. Many are curious to see movie, how songs Mitwa, where's the party tonite are picturised. Emraan Hashmi is a lucky actor when it comes to songs. He usually gets songs (Murder, Zeher, Gangster) unlike his contemporaries.
  • Marketing: Hype creation before release is important. New marketing mediums are ringtones, wallpapers etc.
  • Entertainment for Lowest Common Denominator: David Dhawan movie are more famous for this.
  • Pakistan Bashing: 3-4 years back this was major success formula. After mumbai blasts this formula may be tried again.
  • Steamy Scenes: $#@*
  • Controversary: Usually contoversary gives free publicity to movie. Recent example for this is Fanaa.

So movies which had only box office success without much crtical acclaim K3G, Raja Hindustani.

Saraswathi
whats required for a movie to obtain Critical Acclaim

  • Fresh Storyline: This is uncommon in Bollywood.
  • Good Screenplay: Rang De Basanti's main USP was screenplay.
  • Good Production Value: Nice locations, Sets, Costumes, Cinematography, Special Effects.
  • Superlative Performance by Actors: Actors who go under skin of the character are appreciated by critics.
  • Songs which are part of screenplay:

Movies which had only critical acclaim were Swades, Lakshya, Yuva ...

In Bollywood movies attaining both Lakshmi and Saraswathi are very rare. Some of such rare movies are Lagaan, Black.
- Lagaan was a period movie based on theme winning of an underdog. Critics appreciated its screeplay and production values. General public liked nail biting cricket match in movie. It was a hit all over India.
- Black was based on the life of Helen Keller. Critics appreciated the movie but dismissed it as multiplex classic. However movie was across the board hit.

Lets take recent releases as examples.
- Krrish. Eventhough it grossed 69 crores in 7days, movie lacked in deparments of screenplay and music, therefore wasn't so much appreciated by critics. But movie is so much successful that the marketing strategy of Krrish has become a case study in top Indian B-schools.
- Omkara. Appreciated by critics. But not doing well at ticket windows, since its not everyone's idea of entertainment.

If there is a conflict between lakshmi and saraswathi what should a film maker prioritize ??

What i feel is packaging (yashraj films are master in this department) of movie is really important with decent storyline, good songs and more stuffs for entertainment. so lakshmi should be primary and saraswathi secondary. Generally a filmmaker is as good as box office performance of his last film. No one remembers a critical acclaimed movie which was unsucessful at box office. People remember Lagaan and Black because they were successful at box office.

But box office is unpredictable. People's idea of entertainment changes from time to time. Rakesh Roshan is one of the few filmmakers who understands the undpredictable box office. Recently there was an article in Times Rakesh Roshan: Bollywood's own Superman. In article its mentioned that Rakesh has defied all labels, improved with each passing project and today understands what will work and what won't at the 'unpredictable box-office'.

To conclude I enjoyed writing blog post about this topic. you would have also enjoyed reading it. But your opinion might be different. Feel free to post it as comments.

Andhra Darshan

Our manager Ramesh's marriage was there at his hometown Addanki ( 50 km from Ongole, Andhra Pradesh) on August 4th 2006. Many people of our team dropped out. Finally me, shreesh and seena were on board. We with 3 people of other team took KSRTC Airavath to Ongole (costal Andhra). We departed from Bangalore around 7 pm and reached Ongole next day at 5am. From there we took ordinary APSRTC bus to Addanki.

Marriage at Addanki:

At Addaki bus stand ramesh's brother came to receive us. He took us to a lodge. After finishing morning ablutions we went to choultry to have breakfast. Then we roamed around Addanki and also went behind marriage procession.

Marriage procession of bride was not so traditional. It had a modern style band. They were playing instruments such as keyboard, electric guitar. The marriage was also not in fully traditional way. Ramesh came to mantap wearing blazer. !!!. Rest of stuffs were traditional. Lunch was served in hygienic way with stuffs such as big paper plate, 500 ml mineral water. However in my icecream there was an insect. I almost become non vegetarian :)

Addanki to Hyderabad:

After lunch at 1.30 pm we decided start our journey to Hyderabad. There was no afternoon, evening bus to Hyderabad from Addanki. So we had to do cut journey to reach Hyderabad by night. We got 'n' number of suggestions about the way we can reach Hyderabad by night. Some said go to Ongole, others said go to Vijaywada and catch train from there, some suggested to go to Guntur. Person at Enquiry counter in Addanki suggested us to go Narasaraopet, from there buses to Hyderabad would be available.

We decided to go to Narasaraopet ( may be named after PV Narasimha Rao, not sure). After reaching Narasraopet we found out that buses to Hyderabad would be available from some other place by name Pidugaralla. We took another bus to Pidugaralla and reached at 5:45 pm. Within 10 minutes we got bus to Hyderabad. We were shocked to hear from conductor that this bus would reach Hyderabad at 11 pm. Seena's plan of boozing were washed out. We came across many places enroute to Hyderabad, namely Vishupuram ( India Cements factory), Nalgonda (this place was in news some years back). It was raining incessantly throughout Andhra. So bus was going at speed slower than usual. Finally bus reached Hyderabad at 12 midnight. Eventhough the journey was lengthy but it wasn't tiresome. thanks to good roads of Andhra. We hardly came across potholes in entire 10 hrs journey.

Hyderabad:

At Hyderabad Raghu had booked room for us at hotel Ambassdor. As soon we got down from bus a autowallah approached us. He said Rs.150 to Hotel. We agreed since didn't had any other option. On the way to hotel we witnessed amazing roads of Hyderabad. Even after continous rain of one day there was hardly any water logging in Hyderabad roads. some of roads in heart of city in heart of city were 5 lane on sigle side. Seeing this seena immediately decided given a chance we will definitely work in Hyderabad. We reached hotel ambassdor at 12.30 am. Security allowed us inside the lobby by enquiring that we already have a booking. After check in formalities we said its time for ctrl-alt-del.

Next day morning I got up by phone ring from Raghu at 7am. He told us to be ready by 8.45 am. We had a plan see Superman Returns at Imax. Raghu got his Wagon-R. We via necklace road to prasadz. necklace road is one of hotspot of Hyderabad. We reached prasadz around 9.30 am. After buying tickets for Superman Returns we took some snaps at complex. Watching movie at was nice experience. Some of 3D scenes were awesome ( separate post is needed to describe everything).

After movie we did photo session again Atmosphere was not as electrifying as our Forum Mall. But Imax is a big plus point for this complex.

Then we decided have lunch. One shouldn't return from Hyderabad without eating biriyani. So Raghu took us to Paradise Hotel. There my friend and ex colleague Naresh Panda joined us there. He started taking about his usual stuffs such as his opinion about movie superman, his arguments with his manager etc. seena almost got irritated with his non stop talking.

After lunch we decided to go to Birla Temple. Its Lord Venkateswara temple constructed on a hillock by birla foundation. The view of city from top was nice. Then we decided to go to Lumbini Garden. On the way we experienced bumper to bumper traffic at some places. (bangalore is not the only place to have such kind of traffic)

From Lumbini Garden we took boat ride to island of Buddha statue. In island we were suprised to see rats !!!.

Then we had ice cream and pani puri at shops near parklane secunderabad. It started raining again. Panda decided to leave to his home. It was end of 6 hrs non stop entertainment. Then Raghu also decided to leave. Without his car it would have difficult to cover places in wet weather.

At 10 pm we boarded Sharma Travels bus to Bangalore and it was end of exciting trip. This was first time I went on excursion with my new colleagues seena, shreesh and raghu. Looking forward to more trips with same group with more people on board.

Thanks to Raghu for his guidance, booking of tickets (both onward & return journey), booking hotel and also for getting his car. Without him this trip wouldn't have been materialised so well.

More photos of this trip are shared at http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=z17nvrm.2uqlvx8u&x=0&y=-foh4yj

Translationno Tarjumeyo...

Live as if you were to die tomorrow, learn as if you were to live forever. This famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi has become like a living motto for me. It was my status message in google talk for last 2 months. seena was saying me change status from many days. Yesterday I saw harish's status message in french. So I decided have my living motto as my status message in a different language. I used Google Translate to translate the quote to German. In German it is "Leben als ob du waren, morgen zu sterben, erlernen, als ob du zum libe für immer warst. "

As soon I changed my message in German language Ande pinged me saying what does your status message mean. After knowing the details he said why not the same status message in Kannada. I asked him suggest the translation. This sparked of translation discussion. Ande suggested "Dinavannu Jivisu Nale illadanthe, Gnanavannu vrudhisu neenu chirayu vendu tilidu"

The translation in Kannada suggested by Ande was bit lengthy. Morever the translated quote should convey the same message as the original one. So I thought of passing problem on this problem to Kannada expert Raveesh Kumar.

The evolution of Kannada translation of this saying is really amazing. Its really difficult to describe that in words. So I have mentioned the excerpts of my chat discussion. (thanks to save chat feature of google talk)

Excerpts of my chat with Raveesh Kumar.

Raveesh: kashta kashta
Raveesh: why btw
me: i will put that as my status message

Raveesh: Nale illa ennuvanthe baduku, amaranaaguvanthe kali
second line is not so good
wait a min
me: ok
Raveesh: kaala anathavembuvanthe kali
hegide

me: Nale illa ennuvanthe baduku, + kaala anathavembuvanthe kali
Raveesh: Ist line is too good
me: ya
Raveesh: need to improvise the second one
me: try
Raveesh: see this
baduku indige, kalike ananthake...
this should be good enough
me: ya

Then I prompted Ande about Raveesh’s translation. Here is excerpt from chat

me: he is too good
his translation
baduku indige, kalike ananthake
naveen.aswath: suuuuuuuuuuuper cool
but
it also mean live for today
kalike ananthake is ok
but i am not happy with the first statement

Then I came back to Raveesh about Ande’s comments

me: badaku indige is not right
live as if u were to die tomrrow
Raveesh: yes then modif y the second one of the first try
me: Nale illa ennuvanthe baduku, + kalike ananthake

Raveesh: kone illavembathe kali
this should be the best
hahaha

me: Nale illa ennuvanthe baduku,
kone illavembathe kali
4:37 PM Raveesh: let me rephrase it
me: ok
Raveesh: "NALE ILLAVEMBANTHE BAALU
KONE ILLAVEMABANTHE KALI
"

me: Nale iillavembanthe baalu, kone illavembanthe kali
Raveesh: yes perfect
me: Nale illavembanthe baalu, kone illavembanthe kali
spelling mistake was there
check my status now
Raveesh: nodide
me: thanks a lot man
Raveesh: no mention

When going back home Raveesh messaged me about enhanced translation
Badukalu nale embudilla, Kaliyalu kone embudilla.
Bingo !!! This coveys the same message as original quote. Also translated quote structure is also nice.

After all these discussion I decided to write a post about this evolution. The result of which is the post which you are reading.

How did you found this post. Feel free to post comments.

PS: Thanks to Raveesh for all discussion. Raveesh you can help Google in implementing English to Kannada translation feature of Google Translate.
