Ombattu Gudde ......

Last weekend I went for trek to Ombattu Gudde at Kabinale Forest Reserve(Shiradi Ghats). This time it was with my colleague Harish and his friends Ganesh and Rohit, who are trekking freaks. Other people of Harish’s group didn’t join because of diwali. We decided to go with only 4 people on board as we wanted to be away from air and noise pollution.

Our initial plan was to Dabbe falls near Sagar. Then it was changed to AmediKallu near Dharmasthala. Five minutes before boarding bus to Dharmasthala we decided to go Ombattu Gudde. Ganesh had been to this place one year back, wasn’t able make it to peak and hoped to make it this time. Recently this place was in news because 3 people from Bangalore had lost their life. See Three youths missing from City missing for more details.

The journey was unfortunately eventful. At Hassan, the driver realized that 'dim-n-dip' mechanism of headlight was not working properly. He decided to continue, but a person jumped into argument and forced driver to take bus into Hassan depot. He was arguing its dangerous to go in Ghat section with non functional headlights and was demanding change of bus. After some ‘tu tu main mai driver decided to carry on with same bus with some workaround.

The condition of NH-48 is horrible after Sakleshpur. I wonder how our driver was able to drive with workaround !!!. We got down 2km after Gundya (near Tata Cocoa estate) at 6am. After walking few 100 meters and crossing a bridge, we got a board on right side showing way to Kabinale Forest Range. From here our trek started. Initial 1 km trek was besides areca plantations and houses. We ignored any villager came across because they might scold and ask us to return because of risk.

After walking for 2km+ at 6:45 am, we heard sounds of elephant from distance and after a few minutes we heard 3-4 gun shoots. What’s happening have we put our life at risk ?. We thought of returning back and goto AmediKallu instead, but we continued lets by quoting ‘The Greatest Risk Is Not Taking One’.

The weather was very humid, my body started drenching with sweat. Also there were ‘part n parcel’ of trek – Leeches. I feel treks are incomplete without bites of this creatures :). One can’t be so generous for blood donation, we were carrying snuff(tobacco powder) to remove Leeches. While trekking we crossed many small streams and two medium sized streams. The forest was so dense that sun was hardly visible. It was densest jungle I had trekked so far.

Ganesh Crossing Kabinale

At 9:15 am we reached banks of river Kabinale and decided to have breakfast (bread butter, MTR ready to eat pongal etc). To continue our trek we had to cross this Kabinale river. The water was waist deep level. After crossing Kabinale we settled down at a rock next to river and removed all leeches attached to our shoes, legs …

At 10.30 am we continued our trek. After crossing some small streams we reached banks of another river Adhahole. Here we found traces of human activities. On the banks there was a sort of bamboo shelter and also of a face of a big bird ( donno which bird it was) placed on top corner. Some people would have eaten that bird as feast. Was it done by villagers, naxalites, forest officials … who knows ??. There were used bullet shells, all over the place. It might be of telescopic rifle.

To continue our trek Ombattu Gudde that we had to cross Adhahole. After R&D of 45 minutes we couldn’t find a way to cross Adhahole. Finally at 11:45 am we decided to return. Now our new plan was to go to Kukke in evening and next day to Dharmasthala. Ganesh was disappointed because it was his 2nd unsuccessful attempt to scale ombattu gudde.

Rohit Boiling Potatoes

Then we came to banks of Kabinale river and decided to relax by getting into water. After that, we decided to have lunch. Ganesh was carrying a utensil to boil water. Rohit(Roti) took charge of lighting fire and boiling water. We used hot water to prepare cup noodles. Roti also made an attempt boil potatoes. He was partially successful, the boiled potato was not really eatable although I ate one.

At 3 pm left we crossed Kabinale and started our trek back to highway(starting point). After some brief rests on the way we reached highway around 6.00 pm. We had tea at hotel Durga Parmeshwari next to bridge. From here we took a jeep to Gundya. From Gundya we got a bus to Kukke Subramanya and reached there around 7.00 pm. We couldn’t get any accomdation at Kukke. All hotels had put ‘No Rooms’ board. Considering the situation we decided to leave for Bangalore same night. We got last row seats in 10 pm bus. After confirming tickets we went to temple for darshan. The crowd at temple was more than usual because of long weekend.

We left Kukke at 10 pm and were back in Bangalore at 6.15 am. It was end of incomplete eventful trek. Hope we will reach till Ombattu Gudde peak in next attempt.

Don ko pakadna vakai Namumkin hai ...

DON – the chase begins again, remake of Big B’s DON(1978) released in theatres today. I was waiting for this movie from last one month. A few weeks back I had read an article, in which it was mentioned that the remake has a different ending. So I decided to see movie as early as possible. The movie wasn’t releasing at my favorite theatre Urvashi and I had to see it at PVR. The advance booking for tickets at PVR started from Sunday itself. I intended to go for premier show on Thursday 10 pm so that I can see movie without even hearing/reading single review. Ande managed to get for 4 people (me, ande, ski and seena) for Friday morning show. I was disappointed because seats were second row from screen, but seeing the movie FDFS was more important.

The movie starts of in typical James Bond movie style with pre credits sequence which does not have relevance to actual storyline. The credits are in green black combination reminds of Hollywood sci-fi movie The Matrix.

The basic plot of movie is same as original. SRK as Don is good but role of Vijay doesn’t suit him. Priyanka Chopra as Roma (junglee billi) has given decent performance. Music of the movie though derived from original is good, especially signature tune is awesome which used as background score in major part of movie, is still lingering in my ears.

Comparisons with the original are inevitable. Lets discuss about some of the similarities and differences.

Similarities

  • Story : 80-90% of story is same as original.
  • Characters Names: Don/Vijay, Roma, De Silva, Narang, Malik, Jasjith, Kamini
  • Songs: ‘Yeh Mera Dil’ and ‘Khaike Pan Banaras …’ with techno mix.
  • Some Dialogues: “Don ko pakadna mushkil nahin, namumkin hai”

Differences

  • Screenplay: In credits it is mentioned that screenplay is adapted from that of Salim-Javed.
  • Climax: there is a twist in the tail. It makes overall story different.
  • Ending: ending is like a Hollywood movie making scope for a sequel (Don: the chase continues ...)
  • Songs: ‘Main hoon don’, ‘Maurya Maurya’, ‘Aaj Ki Raat’.
  • Mobile Phones: Motorala phones are part and parcel of screenplay and each character has got a different model Don -V3 Razr Black, De Silva - L7, Roma - Pebel, Anita - V3 Razr Pink.
  • Special Effects and Visual Appeal.

As of now I can mention only these points. If I see original and remake again, I will add more points.

There a few good scenes in the movie (may be lifted from some Hollywood flicks). These scenes good in style and technical angle but some are no so good when looked from perspective of substance.

  • De Silva chasing Don. A ordinary chasing scene, but well presented by screen splits and nice camera work.
  • The members Don’s gang rescuing Don from police by airlifting ambulance.
  • Don/Vijay escaping from airplane by sky diving.
  • Jasjith crossing Petronas Tower Bridge.
  • Fight sequence between Vardhan and Don.

Minuses of the movie

  • 17 reels is too much for a slick and stylish movie. Since this movie is a remake crisp editing was required to avoid boredom.
  • Screenplay is not as engaging as the original.
  • Characterization (see references).
  • Flaws in the script (If I see the movie again by chance, I will elaborate on this).

To conclude I saw this movie without reading even a single review. First of all remaking a movie is a big risk and Farhan has done it by adding style and surprises. In my opinion it is watchable, paisa vasool movie, could have been better with deft execution.

So whats your opinion about the movie, please post it as comments (anonymous comments are allowed). Don't forget to mention your name because I will be moderating comments.

Phooljhadi 2006

Last week there were cultural events at our company for Phooljhadi 2006. Events started on Monday 9th October and concluded with Grand Finale on Friday 13th October.

On Monday there was dance competition. We went to main campus at 4.30 pm, by that time last dance performance was going on. Then there was on the spot performance. Some of on the spot performances rocked the arena. Ski with GG, Naveen did doped dancing off stage.

On Tuesday there was skit competition. At 11.30am we decided to participate. Our skit was scripted in 45 minutes with major contribution from Naveen. It was titled 'Shande ke karnaame'. Execution was nice but we didn't concluded it properly. Saying "No moral" in the end was not appreciated.

Wednesday was very busy day. In morning there was Dumb Charades. Prelims was personality round. Ski did the miming. He was given "Ashutosh Gowarikar" to enact. We cracked that in 21 seconds. We qualified for finals coming 4th in prelims.

In the finals 1st round was about Sports Personality. In this round person miming was not allowed to use his hands. So we had develop protocol for it on the spot. The clues were very easy. We got "Mahendra Singh Dhoni" to enact, it was cracked in 23 seconds. Others cracked in less than 10 seconds. 2nd round was about Brands and Products. From this round onwards we were allowed to use hands. We got "Sony", which we cracked in 3 seconds!!!. Ski used right approach to enact camera and we got Sony in three guesses. In 3rd round we were supposed to crack 5 daily used objects in 30 seconds. We got Camera, Screw Driver, Hammer, Spanner and Eraser. We cracked all 5 and got bonus points also.

Next event was 20 questions. In prelim there was 'objects' round we got "Jigsaw puzzle", we couldn't crack it. It was dam tough. In 'geographical location' round we cracked "Madrid" in 5 questions!!!. This was sufficient for us to qualify for finals. In finals there were two rounds. In personality round "Anoushka Shankar" was too tough to crack. In professions round we cracked "Opthalmologist" in 15+ questions.

For Pictionary we gave on the spot entry. In 'movie' we couldn't crack "Casablanca". We left the competition mid way as we had no chance of winning.

In evening we went to main campus to participate in quiz. We couldn't qualify for finals. We answered 9 questions and Raghu’s team who answered 10 questions qualified. (we missed by 1 point :( ). So it was time to play role of audience for quiz finals. In the finals apart from Vexillography round and a few questions, qualities of rest of questions were sub-standard. Some of the questions : How bits make one byte? Who invented Penicillin? It reminded me quizzing in my primary and high school days.

Thursday I decided to concentrate on work. But Ravi took me in his team for Mad-Ads. At 3.30 pm ski and naveen decided to participate. I came out of Ravi's team and joined ski, seena, naveen and raghu. The product we got was 'lungi with zip'.

We had three plots in our mad-add. Plot 1 : Creation of 'Lungi with zip' by Brahma for Shanderishi, Plot 2: Rola Kutti waiting for girl friend, Plot 3: Mittal Seth turning into a poor man and subsequent explanation by IIMB professor. Our mad-add came out very well. We were laughing continuously for one hour after performance.

From evening floor decoration started. Rollei & co came back from shopping at 5.30 pm and started decoration immediately. I played supporting role for decoration, was there in office till 11.30 pm. Friday morning floor decoration continued. I had a conference call to attend at 12 noon about some issue in PD.

We were representing state of Rajasthan. Rollie and Naveen were wearing Rajasthani costume. They explained abt decoration of our floor to judges. They were many more stuffs other than decoration such Rajasthani dance by sugandha in front of Maharaja (Ski). In 9th floor they had decorated with various landmarks of Rajasthan such as Ajmer Dargha, Pushkar Lake etc.

In evening there was grand finale and award ceremony at palace grounds. There was fashion show, dance performances (solo and group). We were winners in Mad-Ads and 2nd runner up in DC. Our madness abt DC ( see DC season by Harish) paid off. If we had cracked MS Dhoni clue fast, we could have been winners. Naveen was awarded Mr.Pataka. I and seena stayed after final event for DJ music, we danced like crazy people.

Finally we left the place around 11.30 and came back to home at 12.00 midnight. To conclude it was end of a wonderful week. It was one of the rare moment I thought why the week came to end ?

Woh Lamhe .....

Woh Lamhe ... sounds like a familiar phrase. yeah it was famous number sung by Atif for movie Zeher. There are many movie titles which were hit numbers before. Some which I can recall Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Koi Mil Gaya, Diwale Dulanhia Le Jayenge.

Woh Lamhe is about relationship between two people Sana Azim (Kangana) and Aditya Grewal (Shiny Ahuha). It is said to be based on real relationship between Mahesh Bhatt and glamour girl of 70s Parveen Babi.

Movie starts with suicide attempt by Sana Azim. Then there is flashback .... 3 years earlier ...

Sana Azim is a famous star having problems in her personal life. She commits to do a film with struggling director Aditya Grewal much against her boyfriend's wishes and also ignoring contracts with a producer. Aditya maintains calculative relationship with Sana, but Sana sees Shiny as sensitive and caring companion and falls in love with him.

Then there is a twist, it discovered that Sana is suffering from schizophrenia (hallucination of people who are not there actually). Sana sees her so called roommate Rani. Aditya putting his career on risk decides to nurse Sana (after he comes know about demise of his father) and takes her Goa, away from her mother and boyfriend (who decide to give her shock treatment). What happens next ... for that u have to see the movie. It is not a fairlytale ending.

Shiny Ahuja's performance is top class. Kangana has improved a lot from her previous endeavour Gangster in which her dialogue delivery was hopeless. There are many scences in movie which are treated well by director Mohit Suri. One of the scene 'Kangana to retaliate throws her undergarment at Shiny in public' has got mixed reaction from critics, one says its poignant and other says its ridiculous.

So is Woh Lamhe worth watching ? This film would be watchable for people who like Mahesh Bhatt’s idea of entertainment, a package with good music of Mohit Suri, deft execution by director, steamy scenes and emotions. For Bangaloreans I feel it can’t be said as must watch in theatres, since its screened only in multiplexes, one has to spend Rs.180 to see this movie :(.

References : reviews of famous critics:

- Taran Adarsh : ( 3 and 1/2 star) : There are many lamhe in WOH LAMHE… that you carry in your heart and that's why the film works for the moviegoer.

- Rajeev Masand: ( 3 star )

Mullayangiri Trek

Last weekend I had been for a trek to Bababudangiri and Mullayangiri. The trek conducted by Arun (parisarapremi) of Rambling Holiday Maker (RHM). We left Bangalore on saturday(30th sept) night and came back on Monday(2nd Oct) evening.

For me this was a trek after a gap of 4 months. I was frustated bcz my new camera(S2 IS) was not getting used comprehensively for many days. Till last weekend there were many probable plans for trip/trek (one was with my BE classmates.). No one took the initiative, ultimately no plan could materialise.

There was a twist in the tale. After keeping 'very very busy' status in gtalk for 2 months suddenly Ande(Naveen) got enthu from somewhere for a trek. Since we were only two, we decided to join an adventure club for a trek, and hence we got on board with Arun's plan. The group was of seven ppl myself, Ande, Arun, Dean, Shusruth, Srinidhi and Pavan. The advantage of going thru an adventure club is that one can be relieved from headache of convincing and getting people on board, but the thrill of planning won't be there :(

We left Bangalore at 11.30 pm by KSRTC Rajamhamsa to Chickmaglur and reached there at 5.30 am. We decided to have breakfast at Nandini Hotel in bus stand. The most sought after breakfast foot item Idly was not ready and he had opt for chow-chow bath, and it turned out to be horrible.

As per plan we had to take '7 am' bus to Bababundangiri, but the departure got delayed because of Ayudha Pooja. The bus was decorated like a bride. Event hough driver of that bus was a Muslim, the pooja was performed in a usual way with Lemon and Kumbalkai. After all formalities the bus departed at 8.30 am. The uphill journey was picturesque, but I dozed almost entire journey. Ande used to frequently wake me up when there was some breathtaking scene to see outside.

Myself in front of bus to BBgiri

We reached Bababudangiri at 10 am. The place was brimming with people in khaki uniform, may be avoid communal violence. On the way to BBgiri also there were many temporary checkpoints. From BBGiri Manakyadhare is 4km. The route to waterfalls was very slippery. My woodlands shoes almost gave up 4-5 times.

Neelakurinji in SuperMacro mode

One of the significance of this trek was Neelakurinji. The blooms once in a blue moon, 12 years to be precise. On the way to waterfalls we came across lots of Neelakurinjis. The vegetation of the region was dominated by blue color (instead of usual green color). I experimented with my new camera by capturing Neelakurinjis in various modes from supermacro mode to landscape mode.

Model Ande amidst Neelakurinji

We reached Manakyadhare around 11 am. The falls was not so graceful., disappointing to be precise. But our disappointed was annulled by nice view of valley downhill. From the falls we took a jeep back to BBgiri as we had catch 11.30 am bus to Sarpadari.

Manakyadhare falls

At BBgiri we had bun and bhajji at a chai shop opposite to dargah entrance. The 11.30am bus was delayed as the driver waited for bahrah savari (group of 12 people) and finally the bus left around 12:30 pm. We got down from the bus at Sarpadhari entrance around 1.30 pm, from there we had to climb 8 km to reach Mullayangiri peak. It was time for lunch. chappaties and gojju which Arun had brought quenched our hunger. after having lunch we continued our ascent. the altimeter reading was 4860.

The ascent was steep but the path was not slippery. we didn't felt tired so much, thanks to overcast condition. On the way we came across flowers other than Neelakuranji. Our first milestone was a Nandi Statue under a tree . We halted at this place for a while and shot some photographs. Further ascent took us to a second milestone - a cave, just 50 mts below the peak, inside which there was a shivalinga. We thought of exploring it further, but gave up after Arun warned us that there might be snakes inside.

Mullayangiri Peak

At 4:45 pm we were atop Mullyangiri peak. On the peak there is a Mulleswara(shiva) temple. It was nice feeling that we were on highest point of Karnataka. The wind was blowing like anything, visibility was not more than 5 meters. Our night stay was planned at bhattara mane. Nice dinner was served at the same place. There was a cat in their house which got celebrity attention from people who were visiting the temple.

Cat at bhattara mane

Next day morning I got up at 6.30 am. when I opened my eyes I saw Ande smiling at me as though he d achieved something great. Then he told me he got up at 5.00 am and completed his morning activities :). After finishing breakfast and morning activities we left the place around 8.15 am. The altimeter reading at the peak was 6180.

Sand Boa

Arun took us thru a different route while going downhill. we had to catch bus at Seethalyamatha(4 km from the peak). while going down temple steps we found a struggling snake (sand boa). Arun and Dean made sure that it's moved to a safer place.

By the time we reached Seethalyamatha the bus had already left. then we had to walk 9 km more to Kaimara. There was no disappointment in the group, instead we had more enthu to trek. From seethalyamatha a dog accompanied us till Kaimara. It helped us in showing the route, a part of the route included a shortcut thru a coffee estate. 3 km before Kaimara we relaxed in an open field and had chappaties which were left over from previous day's reserves.

At 12:15 pm we reached Kaimara. From there we got a local bus to chickmaglur and reached bus stand around 1 pm. As we soon we got down we got 'Suvarna Karnataka Sarige' to Bangalore. The journey was very nice. Myself and Ande discussed about many stuffs. Pavan, who was sitting in front us had a horrible time being next to a promiscuous female (as described by Ande). Lot of things happened and it turned out to be free entertainment for us.

Finally, at 7 pm we were back in Bangalore. Thanks to Arun and Dean for conducting nice and wonderful trek. In entire trek I never felt like the trek conducted by an adventure club. It was nice beginning for the current trekking season. Looking forward to more treks in this season with more people on board (esp naresh panda).

Snaps are shared at Mullayangiri Picasa Album.

The more snaps of this trek are uploaded to Kodak Gallery. click here to see the same.

Comments are welcome.
