Gadag + Badami, Pattadkal, Aihole

I had been to Gadag last weekend to attend vaikuntha samaradhane of Saqqu Dodamma. My mother was already there at the place, myself with Seema(my sister), BIL, Shivani(niece) travelled on Thursday 20th September. Our plan was to stay one day in Gadag, attend all functions and next day to tour historical locations of Bagalkot(shooting locations of recent movie Guru).

We left Bangalore 9 pm by VRL bus direct to Gadag. Next morning we reached Gadag at 7.30 am. After completing ablutions at the home, I attended homa for a while. Then I accompanied Murali for his nostalgic visit to REC Hulkoti(7km from Gadag).

Murali in front of REC, Hulkoti

There he met his professors and lectures. He showed me the hostel, mess and canteen and shared all his emotions. We had Kadak Chai and Goli Bajji at the canteen.

Veeranarayana Gudi

At 12 noon we travelled back to Gadag to attend function at Veeranarayana Kalyana Mantapa. Vimal had already come there. After magalaarthi at adjacent veeranarayana temple there was good lunch with variety of sweets. After lunch we (me, vimal & murali) relaxed for while as the lunch was very heavy.

Improvised Jute Aata

We spent time grand children of Saqqu Dodamma, also observed and enjoyed their improvised version of jute aata. After seeing jute aata we had a walk back to the home. The roads are not in good condition. There is a lot of scope for improvement. The place is yet to look like a district headquarter.

Later in the evening we went to see movie ‘Hey Baby’ at Sri Krishna Theatre (theater owned by our cousins). Well who will deny a hit for movie that without any tickets. The movie was a nice 'time pass'. I missed 15 minutes of the movie, since I had to discuss with Hanumanth(transport guy) about next day trip. Murali, Vimal and other relatives left that night itself. We(BIL,sister & my mother) stayed overnight.

Next day I got the up at 5.15 am and got ready as soon as possible. My mother, Seema and Shivani took some time to get ready. At 7.30 am Hanumanth came to pick us in his ambassador. Before leaving Gadag we had breakfast at GRB.

The journey was comfortable, as the roads were in okay condition in spite of recent incessant torrential rain. At some places the water had overflown the the bridge level, with dumps of mud on the bridge.

Mud deposits over bridge

2-3 days before travelling on these would have been impossible. The rains has taken it's toll on the farmers.

Winnowing

Many of the crops were destroyed especially Maize. For the remaining crops they were doing premature harvesting, with dumps of maize on the roads, so it gets winnowed by moving vehicles.

Aihole

Durga Temple

Our first destination was Aihole. We reached the main site(group of temples) around 10.45 am. We had photograph session at many places. Durga Temple was center of attractions. The others temple were not maintained properly, majority of them were stinking, because of bat's urine.

Pattadkal

Pattadkal is categorized as UNESCO world heritage site. We reached the place around 12.15 pm. There are many temples here also. The site is next to malaprabha river. Virupaksha and mallikarjuna temple are temples here. Inside these temples many stuffs from puranas, panchatantra are depicted.

Vishnu Purana

In mallikarjuna temple there is depiction different types hairstyles of Chalukyan Era. sounds cool :)

Hairstyle

Well, since the place is banks of river the incessant rain had it's effects in many folds. The low lying areas of town was submerged.

Drying Notebooks

As a result government gave permission to people to stay in temple complex itself which is at higher level. In the temple complex, the school childrens were drying there note books which were drench in rains.

Mahakoota

We saw this place accidentally as it was on the was to Badami. Later I came to know that some of the sequences of Aishwarya’s 'Barso Re' song was shot here.

Shivling

Can you recall a sequence where she dives into a pool and worships a shivling. It is there within Mahakoota temple complex.

Badami

At Badami, first we had Jola rotty at some hotel as Lunch. The food was ok types. After lunch we went to Badami Fort. The fort has many cave temples (Guhalayas).

Shaiva Guhalaya

Jaina Guhalaya

Pulakeshi-1 constructed this site with an inspiration from Ajanta Caves(overheard a Guide's explaination). There are many levels at the site, at each level there is different kind of Guhalaya. The view of the lake Agastya Teertha from top is breathtaking.

Agastya Teertha

Here also Guru movie was shot, one of the sequence is the deal sequence between Abhishek and Arya Babbar(Aishwarya's brother in the movie). 'Ek lo ek muft' song was also shot at the same place. There are many things to see and understand in these Guhalayas. In the end we realised that we should have opted for a guide to explore this place.

Banashankari Temple

We had darshan at Banashankari temple(5 km from Badami). This place was bit contemporary. many people worship at this place. After darshan travelled back to Gadag and reached at 7 pm.

In Gadag we went to Trikuteshwara temple. As it already dark the carvings here were not visible properly, we decided to wind up. Then we went to Kamat Restaurant and had special tea there. It was too good. Later we had mirchi bonda at some bonda corner. It was spicy like anything.

After having dinner I spent time with Dodamma's grandchild. They were busy playing some computer game.

Generation-Y

Finally we left Gadag at 9.30 pm and were back in Bangalore next morning at 8 am. End of nice trip, but while travelling I missed two good cricket matches of T20 world cup India v/s South Africa and India v/s Australia.

Chake De India ka sequel

The sequel to the recent movie of 'Chak De India' was created in real life by Team India by beating Pakistan in a thrilling ICC Twenty 20(T20) final.

Team India lifting T20 world cup( image courtesy: worldtwenty20)

The journey of winners of inaugural T20 world cup has been a absolute fairytale.

- March 23rd 2007, India made premature exit from ODI World Cup, after losing to Sri Lanka in a group match. The popularity of cricket went to new lows in India.
- July 2007, India's Trinity(Sachin, Saurav & Dravid) opt out of T20 world cup, as the format is suitable for younger players. Then BCCI had to select new captain. After seeing matching saving innings at Lord's Test, selectors decide to give responsibility to M S Dhoni.
- India lost closely fought ODI series against England. The preparation for T20 world cup was evident from Robin Uttappa's strokeplay in 6th match of the series.
- T20 kicked off, no one had expectations Dhoni's team.
- Match 1: Vs Scotland, match abandoned
- Match 2: Vs Pakistan, a thrilling tie. India emerge victorious through penalty shoot out(bowl out).
- Match 3: Vs New Zealand, first match of Super-8. India end up on losing side by not able to cross Vettori hurdle.
- Match 4: Vs England, a do or die match. Yuvraj Singh doing Full monty(6 of 6) to Staurt Broad and ultimately was the difference in winning and losing.
- Match 5: Vs South Africa, another do or die match. India held their nerves to crush Proteas on their home soil.
- Semi Final: Vs Australia. Yuvraj came to party again and disciplined bowling in last overs did the trick. ODI world champs knocked out.
- Final: Vs Pakistan. the build for this match was superb and was a described as mother of all contest. It turned out exactly the same. India lifted the trophy by defeating their arch rivals by 5 runs.

Got to feel for Misbah ul Haq. He had almost won the match of Pakistan, his fate was similar to that of Lance Klusener in 1999 ODI World Cup. His attempted scoop over fine leg, seemed initially like a winning shot for TV viewers. Ultimately ball landed in safe hands of Sreesanth and match over. India ne T20 world cup ko Chak Diya!!! Kudos to Team India and especially to captain Dhoni for making right tactical decisions at right time.

It's shame there had to be a loser after this thrilling game. But, the game of Cricket is the ultimate winner.

Some observations/opinions:
  • I believe T20 format will globalise the game of cricket. 'Minnows' word will be eliminated from ICC's cricket dictionary. T20 format will bring non Commonwealth sporting nations such as USA, China, Korea to main league of cricket.
  • M. S. Dhoni joined Kapil Dev to form the league of Indian world cup winning team captains. well, both of are not from big cities(Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad).
  • Simon Taufel(Australia) one of the best umpire of current era got the first chance to umpire in a world cup final. He was denied a chance as Team Australia was playing each and every final in recent times.
  • 'Chak De India' song is going to be sports anthem of India. It really raises one's energy levels. The phrase is used in all form of media to report victory of Team India.
  • As advent of T20 format 'slog overs' will no longer be most recently used words in Cricket. Every second counts and every moment is a highlight.
  • A cricket world cup final on Monday at 5.30 pm IST. not in tune with India cricket viewers. Well, who would have expected India & Pakistan to be in final. Actually, the timings were in tune with Australian cricket viewers, as their Team was most favorite to enter finals.
  • As Gavaskar said 'the best dot ball is the wicket ball' is valid for T20 format as well, and India won the thrilling match by bowling 10 best dot balls. It's not a game loaded in favour of batsmen, as reiterated by many naysayers before the start of tournament.

Other's say
- Sambit Bal: Oh Misbah, not again.
- Indiatimes: Twenty20 will become huge in India, says Dhoni.

Every moment is a highlight now

The duration of a cricket match (ODI and Test) is very long. We tend to miss out most of the moments because of our day to day business. In order to watch the complete match LIVE, we either have to take leave from our workplace or burn the midnight oil.

The broadcasters solved the problem by a creating a package 'Highlights', where exciting moments of a match are packaged into a 2 hour program. This was just a workaround as watching highlight was not as exciting as watching a Live cricket match .

The slow pace cricket generally became boring with a few exceptional contests. As a result many people(including me) lost interest in cricket. The 2007 world cup was most boring patch in cricket history. No team was able to pose to a challenge to mighty Australia. After the world cup I saw one forward which mentioned that in next world cup Australia should be awarded the trophy right after the opening ceremony :). No need to conduct the matches.

Then came the transition in form of Twenty20 world cup. ICC decided to conduct the tournament in a shorter version - 20 over a side format, which was introduced in 2003 to popularize domestic cricket in England. Usually in a ODI match the first and the last 10 overs will be exciting, so the creator of Twenty20 would have thought let's have 20 overs only and save time :)

A day before the start of the tournament I read in a TOI editorial that there have been many shorter version innovation like six a side, double wicket, single wicket but Twenty20 seems to stay alive as it is more like cricket. The format is packaged with music, cheer dancers etc.

After upsets by Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, India Pakistan Tie the Twenty20 Worldcup has turn out to be more exciting than the ODI world cup a few months back.

The blockbuster match between India was Pakistan was awesome. The match was tied, so the winner was decided by bowl-out. It was the best part, the scenes were similar to a penalty shootout in soccer. Team India won the bowl-out contest as they had done there home work properly, they picked the right bowlers for bowl-out.

There was not even a dull moment in the match, every moment was like a highlight. Thanks to short duration, the match started at 9.30 pm IST, I didn't even missed a single moment, even though it took to me 3 hours to travel from office to home.

Mathad Mathad Mallige

I had discussed with Arun Bhat about watching a Kannada movie together a few weeks back. On Tuesday(28th August) Arun pinged me asking ....

arunchs: seen Mathad Mathad Mallige?
me: no
heard that it's good
arunchs: ok..
me: what abt u ?
arunchs: neither have i.. thinking of seeing
wanna go tomorrow or day after?

The deal was done, we decided to see the movie at PVR. The next task was to book the tickets. I contacted Gururaj Naik immediately on gtalk for booking the tickets, he promptly agreed. Next day in office I saw my colleague Rollei booking tickets thru ICICI platinum card (1+1 offer). I immediately messaged to Guru that he need not book tickets, thought of booking tickets using Rollei’s card. But as per online booking rules one has to produce the credit card while claiming the tickets. Therefore I ended up booking tickets with my Citibank gold card paying full amount :). Also, by the time Guru saw my message he had already booked the tickets, double booking !!!. Ultimately, he ended up seeing the movie with Naveen Sajjan as he couldn't cancel the tickets.

Mathad Mathad Mallige is the latest directorial of venture of Dr. Nagathahalli Chandrashekar[NHC], who made excellent movies such as America America, Amrithadhare previously. The movie is about a village Jenukoppa and it's protector Hoovaiah[Vishuvardhan]. The main revenue for the village is floral cultivation. The village soil is very rich in minerals, as a result very rare kind of flowers can be cultivated on it.

*** Spoiler Warning ***

Life will be going on as usual, and then a MNC company 'USD' discovers thru remote sensing that mining in the region around Jenukoppa can fetch them millions of dollars. The company tries morally questionable means i.e. bribing ministers with Vitamin-M(money) to start mining. The government orders villagers to move some other place. Hoovaiah objects the order, saying that mining is illegal and would the villagers will lose their livelihood. The villagers will be in catch-22 situation whether to go for the government compensation or to support Hoovaiah.

Hoovaiah faces setbacks. His two dearest daughters end up marrying against his wish. This incidence makes some villagers lose trust in him. His critics try to take advantage of the situation, but are not successful initially. The authorities manage to start mining by unmoral means by attacking the village in absence of Hoovaiah, when he was in the city discussing issues with the MNC and the ministers.

The policing firing result in death of Hoovaiah's wife[Suhasini] wife also. His elder daughter (10th fail one) joins a Naxalite group led by Sudeep. The naxalites assain the minister, corrupt panchayat leaders. The persistence of Hoovaiah rules. He files petition in Supreme Court with a help of a lawyer(played by NHC himself) and starts hunger strike. His voice reaches all over the country, thanks to coverage of TV9. The farmers of nearby village come for his support and offer resistance to the attack of police (who were supposed to arrest Hoovaiah, suspecting him as Naxalite). The attempt of police is foiled by farmers.

Finally, Hoovaiah wins the war when Supreme Court orders to stop mining in Jenukoppa. The ending I felt was somewhat abrupt. The policemen were planning to attack Hoovaiah in helicopter and next scene was his lawyer[NHC] landing in JenuKoppa carrying Supreme Court judgement and congratulating Hoovaiah. There is no connection between this scence to previous scence in which police decide to attack Jenukoppa using a helicopter.

The movie reminds us of recent battle against industrialization in Singrur and Nandigram. Nagatahalli Chandrashekar(NHC) has got the important facts right such as Mines and Minerals Act etc. In the movie, the effects of industrialization all over the world in Kenya, Ghana, and Indonesia are mentioned. Hoovaiah mentions that government is doing nothing for farmers, in Vidharbha region a everyday three farmers commit suicide.

Overall the movie is good when viewed from angle conceptualization and storyline. One is treated with decent comedy throughout the movie. Technically movie could have been better. The cinematography and visual effects are not so good. This statement may be harsh, but the Mungaaru Male phenomenon has raised the bar in Kannada film industry, everyone expects other movies to match the benchmarks set by Mungaaru Male.
